Looking for Moderators for the near future

Post by jfreeze256 on Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:39 am

Oookay folks. Here is the skinny.
Remember my 1.3 video? Remember how many noobs we got? Wink
Well my latest video is nearing completion. With it, I expect we'll get even more players to our server than the 1.3 video!
That means we need a few people to volunteer (and then be selected by the admins) to become moderators.

A moderator will have a few commands to help keep the server running in absence of admins. They will also be responsible for solving disputes between players.
If a moderator is solving a dispute, the player must listen to him/her. Any problems can be addressed, by the player, in the reports/appeals area of the forums. They will also whitelist new players on the forums and follow the whitelisting guidelines.

Commands (so far) that Mods will have access too:
    /tp {player} -instant tp to a player
/tempban {player} {time} -temp ban players. Perma bans will be done by admins
/whitelist add {player} -add a player to the server's whitelist.
/lookup {player} -looks up a player's ban history from other servers. (MCBans)
    /invsee {player} -look at a players inventory.
/coreprotect -Check out who destroyed/placed blocks. Also will have the ability to rollback griefings.
    /mute {player} -disallow a player from chatting
/back -allows mod to go back to previous location
/fixwater {radius} -ya know those annoying moving water blocks that occur when removing a block from standing water? That fixes those.
/fixlava {radius} -does the same as water, but to lava

---Other commands probably to come. Please suggest what you think would be good to have!

Who would be interested in this? Please let me know here.
    Thanks!

I added mute. Can you think of a good reason to add kick? They have tempban if need be

I will also put myself up for this. Less responsibility than admin. Smile

I like the list of commands however I would be a little nervous allowing full core protect capabilities without proper education. I know how easy it would be to accidentally roll back everything a player did globally instead of just in a specified area and with massive numbers of blocks being changed I'm not sure what effect that would have on the server were it in the thousands of blocks. Just worried that someone uneducated on how the tool works might run the command with the wrong arguments and inadvertently cause more harm than good.

That being said I also think them having access to it's investigative tools is needed. Possibly restricting mods to investigation and leave rollbacks to admins unless there is the capability to restrict how many blocks a mod's rollback can affect or maybe restrict them to only being able to do roll backs using the area argument? (I'm not familiar with this mod to know if those specific restrictions are doable)

Just a thought of caution on that one.

On that note I think the rest of the commands are good. I like and dislike the idea of the /back command simply for the reason that if a mod is needed to tp to another player to investigate something they should have the ability to go back to what they were doing using /back however being a VIP I don't want a bunch of non-VIPs to get /back just because they became mods....Pros/Cons on that one??

Those are my initial thoughts on this and I definitely think having mods with these capabilities will be an asset to the server.

I would also submit myself as a candidate for babysitter....er moderator duty. Wink

how do you think the admins learned all of the commands? I remember seeing Insaan testing worldguard commands near his house when he became admin Razz. So I would suggest that the moderators should watch J's videos about coreprotect (yeah I watched those kind of tutorials Razz) and go through a 'exam' where they have to rollback different areas, check who took or placed blocks and more. Some kind of trial of passage that shows J that the invidual can be trusted with the commands that they get.
And I dont think J will choose someone that doesnt have the skills to use those commands properly

I think /back would have to be in there, as you said petey you can't expect mods to investigate things that would interrupt their own play and not give them a way to get easily back to what they were doing. I don't think the argument of not getting it because of VIP makes sense really, for the small group of mods there would be it wouldn't be like suddenly everyone could use it again, it doesn't provide all the benefits of VIP it only adds a tool to allow for more seamless investigation and resolution of a situation Razz

Also I think the moderators should have the /vanish command in combination with the tp command. For example someone tells you that he suspects a person of xraying (or you think he is xraying) you could go invisible to confirm those suspicions before reporting this to a admin.

    ....and why not /kittycannon lol!

Having /vanish wouldn't be essential, a mod's job would to be to deal with it until an admin can take care of it, in the case of xraying you would to to them, see what they think from what they see and slap a tempban in place if they think they are. Then once an admin is available they would handle it and take it further if needed, giving mods too much power makes them nearly admins and that's not what the point of this is. It's to essentially be "diet admins" who assist admins as best they can with smaller tasks, not have the full powers to do anything it's only a position to supervise day to day play and report back to admins

But what if the moderator does a false tempban? when someone tells you he suspects someone of xraying or that person is spamming in the chat, OMG diamond.....OMG again Very Happy how do I keep finding that much diamond Very Happy, does that mean you know enough evidence to give that person a tempban?. I think /vanish could be usefull in such cases but that is for J to decide.

I know it could be useful but it becomes to what extent do mod's powers go, too far it encroaches on admin territory, but as you say J has final call on it all anyway

Eh, I don't think that mods should have /vanish, us admins really don't use it seriously that much, and when we do use it, it's used to catch X-rayers, which really isn't that common.

I agree with the /back command statements and as I stated there are both pros and cons.

/vanish should be reserved for admins IMO as wiggles states it's used rarely and if there really is suspicion of x-raying it should be reported to the admins to handle.

The topic of the roll back ability goes both ways. I don't see the need to roll back happenings as a common enough occurrence to give that capability to mods. If you really wanna learn how to use it either be a good mod and maybe you'll become admin or go fire up a server of your own and install the plugin and play with it there.

IMO moderators should have limited capabilities to PREVENT greifing and keep the server fun...we have enough admins on on a regular basis to take care of the occasional roll back if needed.

/back would probably be a good idea since Mods would be able to TP to a player but not back from that player

/vanish will be reserved for admins only. Mods are not responsible for spying on people.

The only way for someone to mess up core protect is to not specify a radius. You must have a player and a rollback time input. It is undoable though.
I had to fix Erik's mistake a few weeks ago when he accidentally rolled back everything a player did in the past 24 hours instead of just the small area he griefed.
CoreProtect isn't as deadly as BigBrother was back in the day. If you messed up a command with BigBrother, there was no going back.
I am afraid, however, that rolling back stuff could be used to cheat. I.E. mining diamond, rolling back mined diamond, mining diamond again. Something like that would instantly equal a perma-ban.
So we truly must trust the people we make admins.

Any more suggestions for commands/powers/abilities mods should have? Smile

I think the commmands as they stand now are ok. They dont grant, total power but allow small changes and quick travel to sort arguements and minor griefing. ^-^

I am interested. Although I think dannyd, zaz, acr and han would all make great moderators if I'm not selected. I feel sorry for the admins making the choice it looks like a hard decision.

Well, I know I haven't been on as much lately, but I'm still part of this server and it's community. I am interested in this.

I've been doing a lot of other stuff lately, but I will try to get on more.

Edit: I do come on these forums mostly daily though
